Sustainable Labels & Eco-Friendly Label Printing

Sustainable Labels & Stickers for Eco-Conscious Brands

One of the most best ways to improve packaging sustainability is by selecting the right label materials. We offer a range of sustainable options, including FSC-certified paper labels sourced from responsibly managed forests, biodegradable labels designed to break down more naturally, and labels manufactured using recycled content.

We can also supply recycled-content polypropylene (PP) labels, providing businesses with durable synthetic label solutions while reducing reliance on virgin materials. For many applications, packaging recyclability can be improved by matching the label material to the packaging itself. For example, a PP container paired with a PP label may be considered recyclable. We also offer wash-off adhesive technologies that allow labels to separate more easily during recycling processes, helping improve material recovery and reducing contamination within recycling streams.

Reducing Environmental Impact Through Production

Sustainability extends far beyond the materials used in a label. The manufacturing process itself also plays a significant role in reducing environmental impact. Abbey Labels continually invests in the latest print technology to improve efficiency and reduce waste. Our Xeikon “Lion” digital press delivers highly efficient production with reduced energy consumption per unit of output compared to previous technologies. The press also utilises advanced eco-toner technology, which helps reduce carbon emissions by more than 10%, incorporates 60% recycled plastic content and is completely free from PFAS and other harmful chemicals.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

Abbey Labels operates a zero-to-landfill policy and continually seeks opportunities to minimise waste throughout the production process. We have invested in energy-efficient LED lighting across our facilities and generate renewable energy through on-site solar panels.

As part of our ongoing commitment to reducing our carbon footprint, we have also introduced electric and hybrid company vehicles, supported by charging infrastructure at our premises. We aim to help our customers achieve their own sustainability objectives while maintaining the highest standards of label performance and quality.

Quality and Environmental Accreditations

Abbey Labels holds ISO 14001 certification, the internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems. This accreditation demonstrates our commitment to continually improving environmental performance and reducing the impact of our operations.

We are also proud to hold the BRCGS AA Grade accreditation, the highest food and drink packaging certification available. This provides reassurance to businesses supplying major retailers and supermarkets.

In addition, Abbey Labels is one of only a small number of UK label printers to hold ESKO HD certification, enabling us to produce exceptionally high-definition print quality while maintaining efficient and responsible production processes.

Are all labels and stickers recyclable?

Many labels and stickers can be recycled, but recyclability depends on both the label material and the packaging it is applied to. Using compatible materials, such as PP labels on PP packaging, can help improve recyclability within appropriate recycling streams.

What is the most environmentally friendly label material?

There is no single answer, as it depends on the application. FSC-certified paper labels, recycled-content materials and biodegradable labels can all offer environmental benefits depending on the product, packaging and disposal route.

Can sustainable labels be waterproof?

Yes. Modern sustainable labels can offer excellent durability, including resistance to moisture, oils and handling. Recycled-content PP labels, for example, provide many of the same performance benefits as traditional synthetic materials.

Do sustainable labels cost more?

While some specialist sustainable materials may have a slightly higher upfront cost, many businesses find the investment worthwhile due to customer demand, sustainability targets and potential brand awareness benefits.

How can labels make packaging easier to recycle?

Using wash-off adhesives and matching label materials to packaging materials can improve separation during recycling and help reduce contamination within recycling streams.
